About the Coastal Painting "Lapstrakes Reflected"

"Lapstrakes Reflected" is a stunning coastal artwork by Nova Scotia artist Catherine McKinnon. It depicts a boat flowing in the water, its hull reflecting off the water in a mesmerizing and surreal way. McKinnon's use of color and light creates a dreamlike atmosphere that draws the viewer in and invites them to explore the details of the imagery.

Use of Color

One of the most striking elements of this blue and orange abstract art is the use of color. McKinnon paints with a palette dominated by blues and oranges, with shades of turquoise, teal, and navy creating a sense of depth and movement in the water.

The boat itself is a patchwork of colors, with reds, oranges, and yellows interspersed with dark earthy tones. As a result, this creates a sense of vitality and energy in the scene, as if the boat is alive and quietly pulsing with energy.

Use of Light

Another notable aspect of this boat painting is the use of light. McKinnon has depicted the boat at a particularly still moment. As a result, this creates a sense of calm and serenity, as if the world is slowing down for just a moment to appreciate the beauty of the scene.

The reflections of the boat in the water are particularly striking, with McKinnon using a technique of layering brushstrokes to create a sense of movement and depth.

Beyond the technical elements of the seascape painting, there is a sense of nostalgia and longing that permeates the scene in contrast to the contemporary abstract style. The boat itself is old, weathered and traditional. It seems to represent a bygone era, when boats were handcrafted and personal, rather than mass-produced and disposable.

Nostalgic Contemporary Art

Ultimately, "Lapstrakes Reflected" is a rowboat painting that invites contemplation and reflection. McKinnon's use of color and light creates a sense of timelessness and universality. The coastal painting is at once nostalgic and contemporary, a celebration of the simple beauty of everyday life. For those who take the time to study it, this large coastal wall art will continue to inspire and delight for years to come.

About the Artist

Catherine McKinnon is a marine artist from Nova Scotia, Canada. She has always been drawn to the ocean, wooden boats and the visual imagery of maritime life. Her coastal art depicts the majesty and beauty of the sea and the boats and ships that navigate its waters.

McKinnon's passion for nautical painting led her to study fine arts at the Rhode Island School of Design. During her time there, she continued to explore her fascination with the ocean in her drawings and paintings.

She developed her own unique style of nautical art which is semi abstract, yet representational. She is particularly drawn to the colors and textures of the sea. As a result, her art reflects this through the use of vibrant colors and bold brushstrokes.

In addition to her painting, McKinnon is a wooden schooner owner, a sailor and a fiddler. Also a passionate advocate for ocean conservation, she is a "Wavemaker" with Oceana, an international organization dedicated to protecting and restoring the world’s oceans on a global scale.
